With more than 30 years of salon experience, Steven Sobel possesses an almost intuitive understanding of hair styling: the way a cut’s geometry frames a client’s face, the subtleties and nuances of color, and, perhaps most importantly, the fine art of listening. Meeting new people and understanding what they want is an integral part of the job. “I can pull from a vast experience of successes and quickly make a creative decision that will change the look of a hairstyle,” Sobel says. This ability is what separates a master hair designer from the rest — and after being named one of the country’s top colorists by Allure magazine in 1999 and one of the top salons by Elle in 2009, Sobel and his team have achieved that distinction.
Sobel’s passion for hair and his affection for his clients are responsible for his longevity and success in the industry. He views hairdressing as both an art and a craft. “I’m absolutely a designer,” he says. “When you design clothing, you have a person in mind for that garment. When I design a haircut, I have several things to keep in mind: the texture of the hair, the amount of hair, and the client’s personal parameters.”
An art collector, photographer, husband, father, and mentor to his stylists, Sobel loves the sense of satisfaction his chosen medium affords him. “The real satisfaction comes days or weeks later, when you see the person again and they say, ‘You know, that haircut was the best I had in my life. I just love my new look.’ That is very fulfilling.”
Housed in a cozy space with wood floors and local art on the walls, Steven Sobel Salon combines top-notch hair artistry with a welcoming atmosphere. Guests are greeted with a glass of wine or cup of coffee, and Midnight, the resident goldendoodle, may awaken from a nap to say hello.
